phpPolls-extras Goodie Pack

This is the Mostly Harmless alpha release of our extras Goodie Pack add-on to phpPolls. The Administration interfaces are back-to-basics simplicity in the extreme putting functionality ahead of UI efficiency and ease-of-use.

This is a work-in-process. There are many design points that have not been touched. What you see is what you get. Use as you would other alpha release distributions.

The initial primary design point for the phpPolls-extras Goodie Pack was to support multi-question surveys with questions clustered into sections. Each section supports an overview statement and a resources/links annotation field.

The current release state:

  • No distro-specific install and config is included yet beyond the basic documents supplied by Till with phpPolls. Since this a relatively transparent extension to phpPolls, I am assuming that our alpha audience is anyone who has or could get phpPolls installed and configured.
  • IP logging and cookie functionality is untouched from phpPolls so far and untested. (My intuition says it is okay for now, but I am looking into this as soon as this preview release goes on-line.)
  • I don't think removing a question item cleans up section-related data, but then their might not be any to worry about. That's on the next steps list, too.)
  • There is still only one kind of question, single-response multiple-choice. (I plan to 'objectify' questions, sections and surveys, etc. in the next iteration. So, true survey flexibility will come when there are more objects under the hood.)
  • There is no section record deletion, although sections with no questions assigned to them will not display, so deleting sections is less of a priority at the moment.
  • Section/question locking and display-only is not in this initial release but coming soon.

To date, I have lead a somewhat charmed programmer's life. My first programming language was Tutor on the Control Data PLATO system. From this incredible experience in the 1970's, I moved to Smalltalk and have spent the bulk of my professional life there and in other, primarily "pure", object-oriented languages and development environments.

Given this cloistered culture where we got to worry about our problem space and not where the source lived, you may appreciate that source files and programmer's editors are quite literally foreign to me. This phpPolls-extras project is a learning experience for me. My goal is to package and maintain this distribution through SourceForge using its CVS repositories. Once I have these basic skills under control, I have some cool stuff I want to let loose. Bear with me, please. Soon these illusory dimensions of our craft will be irrelevant. Until then, mea culpa.

Thank you for your interest in our phpPolls-extras Goodie Pack.
